As the 62nd season at Raleigh's NASCAR Regional Home Track draws near, the staff at Wake County Speedway is working late into the night to prepare the 1/4-mile asphalt oval for another great year of short track racing.
Opening night is Friday, April 5th when the green flag drops on the 94.7 QDR-Capital City 155, but before the big event, comes the 2024 Media Day and Open Practice on Friday, March 29th from 3 pm to 7 pm (or until dark).
Fans and media coming to watch the final preseason practice on March 29th will see some of the ongoing improvements that Track Owner/Promoter Charlie Hansen and his crew hope to have completed before the season opener like the track's new video board being installed on the backstretch.
Other major improvements will be completed over the course of the upcoming racing season like finishing a new lower pit parking area for the INEX Legend and 94.7 QDR Bandolero race teams. Once these race teams are allowed to move to the new bottom pit area, the large grass parking space directly across from the main pit entrance gate will then be open for "Fans Only Parking."
Visitors should keep in mind, however, that many of the projects being undertaken at the speedway are still a "work in progress" due to the manpower and hours needed to complete them, so please bear with us while some of these construction projects continue.
One change that fans will see this season is a new, expanded Fan Midway as you enter the main gate. On the right, you'll see the familiar Raccoon Grill Main Speedway Concessions Trailer with a selection of Bullring staples like bologna burgers, hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken fingers, fries, and Pepsi products. Pepsi products, including bottled water can also be found at Checker's Concession Window inside the Race Tower.
Beneath the Glenn Simpkins Grandstand, around the corner from Mike's Speed Shop souvenir trailer, is the speedway's food vendor row.
The Raccoon Grill Fair Food Trailer will be first in line, featuring funnel cakes and other "fair food" type treats. Next up, is Big Red's Smoke Exchange, serving up some delicious N.C. BBQ for race fans, and to round out the speedway food mix will be Williams Creations of NC, offering boiled peanuts, pork skins, and homemade candy.
