Media Day 2023 and the second of two pre-season test sessions for drivers is set for Friday, March 24th at Raleigh's NASCAR Roots Home Track, Wake County Speedway.
Track Promoter Charlie Hansen, the speedway's staff, and area contractors have been working overtime to bring about some major improvements to the sixty-one-year-old short track in preparation for opening night, March 31st.
At the top of the improvement list is the speedway's freshly repaved racing surface, complete with painted lane markers and bump strips added between Turns 3 and 4 to keep race cars off the inside shoulder nearest the concrete wall.
Brand new fencing has been added all around the infield pit area, complete with added access gates to the track for speedway safety crews.
Hansen and his team have also installed hundreds of feet of 8' foot tall outer fencing in Turns 2 and 3 to increase the advertising opportunities for local businesses who want to support Wake County Speedway and put their brand in front of thousands of race fans on Friday nights.
Fans and media coming to watch the final preseason practice on March 24th will see some of the ongoing improvements that Hansen and his team hope to have completed before the season opener like the track's new sound system.
Other major improvements will be completed over the course of the upcoming racing season. and beyond, like burying power cables under the speedway to eliminate the crisscrossing pattern of old, overhead wiring to the light poles. The speedway is also working to install new lighting in the parking areas and finish a new lower pit parking area for the INEX Legend and 94.7 QDR Bandolero race teams.
Race teams in all divisions at Wake County Speedway will benefit from the new concrete floor being finished in the Tech Shed which will now feature built-in scales for the race cars.
Visitors should keep in mind, however, that many of the projects being undertaken at the speedway are still a "work in progress" because funding for the speedway's capital improvements did not arrive until the last day of 2022, causing a major delay in getting the work started.
